Do we have supernatural powers?

I often hear people reporting that they feel or dream events before they happen; the creepiest ones being people who pretend to be able to predict accidents or deaths. To be honest, I don’t believe that it’s rationally possible.

I have never consulted any fortune-teller or shaman and I have also never relied on tarot cards, because I don’t believe in such prophecies.

But I cannot fail to observe that there are some disturbing cases: let me tell you what I have personally experienced.

I weigh myself once a week and each time just before stepping on the scale, I have a kind of “vision” of what my exact weight will be. My scale displays the weight in kilos, with one digit after the comma. Of course, my weight does not drastically vary from one week to another; it generally remains within a 1-kilo interval. That means that there is a possible variation range of about 10 digits after the comma, so in other words, the chance of guessing the 3 figures right is statistically 1 in 10. Yet I can predict the right numbers at least 8 times out of 10, enough to wonder if it is really just a coincidence.

So what? Does it fall into the realm of intuition? Do I have a hidden brain function that unconsciously manages the calories in/calories out equation during the week and produces the right result? Not theoretically impossible, but realistically doubtful…

I’m sure that you have already heard various similar stories from people telling you that they can predict little things of day-to-day life, like when the phone will ring or who is behind the door when they hear the bell.

My husband sometimes says, while visiting a place he is not supposed to know, that he has the impression of having already been there, even remembering many details. Could it be that he watched a documentary about the place too long ago to remember, yet his subconscious suddenly prompts the memories? Not theoretically impossible, but the doubt always remains.

A friend of mine tells me that, when he thinks hard about someone, he almost always ends up running into that person over the next few days, making him wonder if he can summon by the power of his mind.

Another example is people being convinced that they have been reincarnated and thus pretending to have reminiscences of their past lives. For some civilizations, it’s even cultural or religion-driven, and I have always found that fascinating.

I have no medical background but I’m sure psychoanalysts would develop many theories to explain what we think could be supernatural, but it’s not my point here. I actually don’t want to hear about these theories because, you know what, I want to keep this little part of mystery alive!

It’s kind of thrilling to believe that we could have some supernatural powers, don’t you think?
